Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival

Nightcliff Seabreeze Festival brings three days and nights of art, music, food and culture to the Nightcliff foreshore in Darwin each May. The programme is broad rather than centred on one type of performance, with the festival supporting visual arts, First Nations culture, music, dance, circus, spoken word, exhibitions, workshops and other live performances. Food and drink stalls run along the foreshore, adding to the festival’s outdoor, community-focused setting.

A standout feature is Jetty ArtSpace, where artwork is displayed around Nightcliff Jetty and judged through community voting. The project includes entries from primary and secondary schools, childcare centres, open groups and individual artists, with separate age categories. The festival’s coastal location also shapes the experience: organisers note that strong sea breezes can affect displayed work, so artists are expected to prepare pieces for secure outdoor hanging. Visitors can vote for the Community Choice prizes, with a chance to win a barbecue if present at the prize announcement.

The festival has a clear environmental focus. It is single-use-plastic-free and soft-drink-free, and food must be served in compostable packaging with compostable utensils. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own plate, bowl, cutlery and cup. Since 2017, the organisers have worked to reduce landfill waste and increase composting, including partnerships with Lakeside Drive Community Garden, Organic Ag and BetterCup. These measures are part of the event’s wider Waste Wise Seabreeze approach.

Seabreeze began in 2004, when local artists, small businesses and community organisations joined together to create a community festival. Larrakia Elder Kathy Mills was invited into those early discussions and named the event Seabreeze. It became an incorporated not-for-profit organisation the following year, with Nightcliff Arts, Music and Culture Incorporated continuing the festival’s volunteer-supported operation. The event suits families, groups and solo visitors looking to explore different art forms across the foreshore. In 2026, the listed times are Friday 8 May from 5pm to 10.30pm, Saturday 9 May from 3pm to 10.30pm, and Sunday 10 May from 3pm to 9pm. The festival remains free for the community, while adults entering the licensed entertainment precinct require a Supporter Pass listed from $10 per day; visitors aged 17 and under remain free.
