Mason Gallery

Mason Gallery in Darwin CBD presents a substantial selection of Australian Aboriginal art, with works sourced primarily from the Central and Western Desert regions, Utopia Aboriginal Lands in the Eastern Desert, Arnhem Land and across the Top End. The collection reflects the breadth of Indigenous visual art from these areas, making the gallery a useful stop for visitors wanting to spend time with paintings and other works connected to distinct artists, communities and Country. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm, and on weekends from 10am to 3pm.

The website highlights carved ironwood owls by Tiwi Islands artist Mario Munkara, painted with natural ochres, as well as a featured work by Kudditji Kngwarreye: My Country (Utopia) Emu Dreaming, an acrylic on linen. Kngwarreye’s work draws on his connection to Utopia and his custodianship of important Dreamings, including Emu Dreaming, My Country and Men’s Ceremonial Dreamings associated with Boundary Bore. His later paintings are described as bold and expressive, moving beyond the dot-art style and exploring colour, space and form with an abstract approach.

The gallery’s history is closely tied to the Mason family. Reg and Debra Mason began acquiring paintings from Aboriginal artists in the Oenpelli area after moving to Arnhem Land for work in 1982. Their collection grew into the Arnhem Land Art Gallery, and the family lived in the region for two decades. A Darwin retail gallery opened in 1997, before the business adopted the Mason Gallery name as its focus expanded to include work from Central Australia. Today, Debra, Tony and Vicki Mason continue that work, with Tony sourcing pieces from Alice Springs and the gallery presenting artists from the Western Desert, Utopia, Arnhem Land and the Top End.

Mason Gallery suits solo visitors, couples, families and small groups who want to browse Aboriginal art in Darwin and learn more about the stories, places and people connected with the works. Its website also offers interior design inspiration and information about new arrivals, so returning visitors may find something different to explore. Mason Gallery operates on Larrakia Country and acknowledges the Larrakia people as Traditional Owners of the Darwin region. It is also a member of the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, supporting the organisation’s work across the Indigenous visual arts industry.
