Aboriginal Bush Traders

Aboriginal Bush Traders is a gallery and retail space in Darwin CBD showcasing Aboriginal art, gifts and cultural products through an Indigenous-owned, not-for-profit social enterprise. Its collection includes paintings, weavings and carvings, with works sourced through relationships with artists, community-owned art centres and independent cultural practitioners across the Northern Territory and beyond. The focus is on authentic, ethically purchased pieces connected to Country, story and cultural practice.

The gallery’s range spans art from the Central Desert, Arnhem Land, the Top End, the Tiwi Islands and other regions of Australia. Its featured artists include Central Desert painters Bevan Tjamitjinpa and Jacinta Numina, Darwin-based artist-in-residence Jessica Lloyd, Yolngu artists Christine Burarrwanga and Sylvia Nulpinditj, carver George Tipo, Palawa artist Wayne Pellagreen and Ritharrngu weaver Megan Wilfred. Their practices cover traditional and contemporary painting, carving, weaving, fibre art and cultural storytelling, giving visitors an opportunity to see the distinct approaches of artists from different communities and Countries.

Alongside the gallery collection, Aboriginal Bush Traders offers Indigenous books, children’s stories, bush food and plant guides, cultural resources, notebooks and journals. Visitors can also browse bush teas, native foods, bush medicine products, skincare, jams, spices, ethical fashion, fabrics, bags, gifts and homewares. The selection includes AIATSIS maps and titles that share Aboriginal knowledge, language, history and storytelling, making the store relevant for thoughtful gifts as well as for people wanting to learn more about First Nations cultures and perspectives.

Exhibitions and artist-focused displays add another layer to the visit, with the website highlighting projects such as Beyond Everlasting, featuring five artists from three generations of one family.
