Happy Yess

Happy Yess is a DIY, not-for-profit live music venue in Darwin CBD, based inside the Brown’s Mart Theatre precinct at 12 Smith Street. Since 2006, it has supported original Darwin music and art, with a particular focus on giving underground and emerging artists a place to meet, develop and try new ideas. The programme is not limited to one genre or format: the venue hosts original bands alongside visual art exhibitions, spoken word, film, karaoke, lectures, open mic jam nights, comedy, bingo and book club events.

The venue’s character comes from its community model. Happy Yess is run with the support of members, artists and volunteers, creating a space shaped by the people who use it rather than a conventional commercial gig venue. It describes itself as friendly and drama-free, with a strong emphasis on live music lovers and local creative work. Door takings, less a small production fee, go directly to performers, and the venue usually charges around $15 at the door, although ticket prices can be set by individual artists and should be checked for each event.

Finding Happy Yess can take a little attention on a first visit. It is next door to the Darwin Bus Interchange and within the historic Brown’s Mart precinct, near the Waterfront end of Smith Street. The venue is somewhat underground and may be quiet before performances get under way, so listening for the music is part of the arrival. Free parking is available on Smith Street outside business hours, while the State Square Underground car park is about 250 metres away. The space is wheelchair accessible, with an accessible bathroom in the foyer, and seating is first in, first seated; guests with access needs can speak with door staff.

Happy Yess suits solo gig-goers, small groups and anyone keen to hear original Territory artists or encounter a less predictable side of Darwin’s arts scene. It can also work for visitors who want a local cultural experience rather than a standard night out. Some events are all-ages, in which case the bar may be closed and water provided. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and small snacks are usually available at the bar, while guide and support dogs are welcome throughout the precinct and leashed dogs are welcome at courtyard events. Be aware that some performances may include smoke machines, flashing lights or strobes, and Auslan interpretation or live captioning is not typical unless advertised.
