Brown's Mart

Brown’s Mart is a long-running performing arts venue in Darwin CBD, presenting a year-round program of contemporary performance works, creative developments and events. Over the years it housed commercial offices, a mining exchange, a bank and government tenants, and sustained major damage during the 1897 cyclone. Its later transformation into a community theatre began when the Darwin Theatre Group proposed a new use for the building. Rehearsals and workshops were underway by 1972, and the restored theatre staged its first production in July 1976.

That history remains visible in the wider theatre precinct, which includes a courtyard and an administration and rehearsal building designed to complement the original structure. Retractable tiered seating was installed in the theatre in 1978, with support from government, businesses and the community. Today, Brown’s Mart suits visitors looking for a changing program of performance, arts festivals, poetry, workshops and community-focused events rather than a fixed entertainment format.
