Casuarina Coastal Reserve Picnic Ground

Casuarina Coastal Reserve Picnic Ground offers a spacious coastal setting in Casuarina, Darwin, with kilometres of unspoilt beach, broad coastline views, dramatic cliffs and stands of casuarina trees. It is a natural choice for a picnic, a casual game of beach cricket or a quiet visit at dusk, when the sun slips over the horizon.

The reserve also gives visitors plenty to notice beyond the beach. Depending on the season, wading and migratory birds may be visible, while nesting turtles can sometimes be seen on the beach. Scattered World War II ruins add a layer of local history, making the area appealing to visitors who enjoy exploring places with a story as well as a view.

Casuarina Coastal Reserve is a significant site for the Larrakia people. At low tide, Darriba Nunggalinya, also known as Old Man Rock, can be seen. Visitors should not disturb the rock or remove shellfish. A designated nudist zone is located on the beach north of Darriba Road; nudity is not permitted outside that area. The reserve was formally declared a park under the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1976 on 31 July 2024. It suits relaxed picnics, small groups, families, solo beach walks and anyone interested in Darwin’s coastal landscape, wildlife and heritage.
