Why it's worth checking out

De La Plage is a relaxed beach café in Cullen Bay, Darwin, built around fresh food, coffee and an easy-going seaside setting. The café describes itself as family and dog friendly, with colourful beanbags, hammocks and umbrellas creating an informal space rather than a conventional sit-down dining room. It is suited to a casual breakfast or lunch, a coffee by the water, or an unhurried catch-up with friends and family.

Food is prepared fresh on the premises, with the café aiming to use local and organic produce sourced from local farmers. The menu includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, giving groups with different dietary needs plenty to consider. De La Plage also offers catering for birthdays, business lunches and other occasions, with its catering menu focused on hand-prepared food and local, free-range produce where possible.

There is more to the venue than daytime café service. On Friday evenings, the café hosts a fish and chips night featuring local wild-caught barramundi. Sunday Sessions, run with the Surf Club, support local artists and musicians, while the first Sunday of each month brings Street Food, an event celebrating different cultures. On these event nights, the club’s licensed bar is open from 5pm to 8pm. These regular community gatherings make De La Plage a practical choice for a relaxed group outing as well as a daytime café visit.

The café was established by Claire Pirau and Sevan Guzel, who met while working in Darwin CBD cafés and restaurants. Their shared approach to food and hospitality led to De La Plage, a name meaning ‘from the beach’ in French. The owners’ Belgian and Turkish backgrounds, along with the multicultural character of their team and Darwin, inform the café’s food and community focus. With its laid-back atmosphere, inclusive menu and mix of music and cultural events, De La Plage offers families, dog owners, locals and visitors a welcoming place to spend time in Darwin.
