Why it's worth checking out
Roadmasters House Museum offers a compact look at the people and infrastructure behind the North Australia Railway and the wider history of the Northern Territory. The building was constructed, probably during the 1920s or 1930s, to house railway staff, including the roadmaster responsible for track maintenance. Displays focus on the work of engineers and surveyors in the Territory.
The house has its own significant story. It was occupied by railway staff until Cyclone Tracy damaged it in 1974, then became a seafarers centre operated by the Roman Catholic Stella Maris organisation after the railway closed in 1976. Its earlier use included office, bar, meals and recreational facilities. Declared a heritage place in 2005, it was later restored by the Northern Territory Government.
Architecturally, Roadmasters House is notable as one of only three remaining pre-war houses in the area enclosed by a slatted or latticed verandah, a once-typical feature that is now rare. Located on McMinn Street in Darwin CBD, it suits visitors interested in local history, heritage buildings, railways and the people who helped develop the Territory. The museum is open Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 1pm, with parking and group bookings available. Adult entry is listed at $5.
