The Darwin History and Wartime Experience

The Darwin History and Wartime Experience offers a guided look at Darwin’s past from the back of a genuine, comfortably restored Second World War army truck. Departing from outside the Tourist Information Office at the top of Smith Street Mall in Darwin CBD, the tour is designed to connect the city’s historic sites with the events that shaped it. The standard Darwin City Sights Tour runs for about 80 minutes and focuses on Darwin’s wartime history, the sites bombed by Japan during the Second World War and the impact of Cyclone Tracy.

The route takes in a broad selection of places associated with Darwin’s development and defence, including Government House, Fort Hill Wharf and Harbour, Parliament House, Charles Darwin National Park, ammunition storage bunkers, the East Point Gun Battery and military precinct, anti-aircraft gun emplacements and the 1934 QANTAS hangar. Along the way, the tour covers pre-war Darwin, the bombing of Darwin, Cyclone Tracy and the colourful characters connected with the city’s past. It is a practical way to see several locations while hearing the history that links them.

For a longer visit, the three-hour city sights tour includes entry to the Defence of Darwin Museum and operates in a hop-on, hop-off format. There is also a half-day charter for groups wanting to choose their own stops, with suggested possibilities including museums, the Oil Storage Tunnels and Charles Darwin National Park. The charter is for the whole truck, making it the most suitable option for a private group or organised outing.

Tours run up to four times daily, seven days a week during Darwin’s dry season from May to October, with listed departures at 10am, 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm. Some services drop passengers at the East Point Military Museum.
