Why it's worth checking out

Million Dollar Fish is a Northern Territory fishing competition and visitor resource centred on the barramundi-rich waters of the Top End. Rather than being a conventional attraction with a single site to explore, it connects anglers with fishing regions including Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine, Arnhem Land and the Tiwi Islands, while also pointing visitors towards fishing charters, wildlife tours, accommodation deals and travel packages.

The competition began in 2015 to encourage visitation and give fishos the chance to catch prize-tagged barramundi. Tagged fish are released across five main regions, with the website describing the event as Australia’s richest fishing competition. Season 11 ended on 31 March 2026, but one Season 11 tagged $1 million barramundi remains active from 1 April to 30 September 2026. Anglers must have registered for Season 11 to claim the million-dollar prize, and the site is directing visitors to stay tuned for Season 12.

For visitors basing themselves in Darwin, the site provides suggested fishing itineraries for one day, two or three days, and a week. These are aimed at different travel schedules and include access to fishing hotspots within reach of the city, as well as options such as land-based fishing, guided charters, boat hire or taking your own boat. That makes Million Dollar Fish most relevant to keen anglers, travelling fishos and groups planning a Top End fishing trip, rather than people looking for a traditional indoor attraction. There is also a 3D digital experience featuring Gary, the real $1 million fish from Season 9, which can be viewed on a mobile device.
