Midpul Art Gallery

Midpul Art Gallery is Charles Darwin University’s public gallery in Darwin CBD, now located at the Danala Education and Community Precinct. It presents a changing program of exhibitions alongside public programs and displays drawn from the CDU Art Collection. Admission is free and everyone is welcome, making it an accessible stop for visitors exploring the city, as well as for locals wanting to spend time with Northern Territory art and culture.

The gallery’s focus is closely tied to place. Its exhibitions and collection explore identity, placemaking and the ways artists connected with the Northern Territory and the wider Asia-Pacific region interpret the world around them. The programme reflects CDU’s community-engagement role and its interest in supporting learning and appreciation through art, rather than operating solely as a university teaching space.

The broader CDU Art Collection contains more than 3,500 works, including printmaking, painting, ceramics, fibre, textiles and sculpture. Pieces are shown through public exhibitions and on-campus displays, with the collection continuing to grow through acquisitions, donations and cultural gifts. For visitors, that means the gallery offers both a current exhibition experience and a window into a substantial collection developed over many years.

Midpul has a history reaching back to 1980, when the collection began as an art school teaching resource. It now has a university-wide and Northern Territory regional remit, with particular attention to community engagement in northern Australia and Southeast Asia. The gallery also includes a shop featuring ceramics, fibre baskets, scarves and T-shirts made by Territory-based artists, along with gift cards, catalogues and books. It is open Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 1pm, with free entry for solo visitors, groups and anyone interested in the region’s artists and cultures.
