Batchelor Museum

Batchelor Museum explores the Northern Territory town’s development through agriculture, wartime aviation, uranium mining and Aboriginal heritage. Its story begins with the Commonwealth’s 1911 takeover of the Territory and the establishment of Batchelor Demonstration Farm in 1912, before moving through the aerodrome’s role as an Allied airbase during the Second World War and the town’s growth around uranium mining in the 1950s.

The museum’s material also considers the Kungarakan and Warrai peoples, the traditional owners of the lands surrounding Batchelor. Other themes include the former Batchelor Farm, the early airfield and the Rum Jungle uranium industry, giving visitors a useful overview of the forces that shaped the township. The museum’s location is listed at Kirra Crescent and Tarkarri Road in Batchelor, near the route to Litchfield National Park.

The project grew from research for a proposed historic walk and the effort to preserve buildings that had become unoccupied and deteriorated. A Crown lease covering the former single women’s quarters from the Rum Jungle period was transferred to the Batchelor Museum Development Association in 2010, with repairs and reinstatement beginning soon after. This background adds a strong community and preservation element to the visit.
